I almost admired the sentence.
It reduced a staged humiliation, an affair slideshow, a prepared separation agreement, and a corporate expense problem to an unfortunate social evening.
I told her I had nothing more to discuss.
The last time I saw the original slideshow was not on Margaret’s television.
It was in the evidence file my lawyer maintained while the divorce was being finalized.
I stopped on the bamboo-arch photograph.
For weeks after that dinner, I had remembered Graham’s arm around Paige, the promise ring, Margaret’s face, Caroline’s smirk, the priest staring at the floor.
But with distance, my eye went somewhere else first.
Bottom corner.
Grand Wailea Maui.
GW-77819-KD.
The tiny number they had never noticed.
They believed numbers were the coldest part of me.
They were wrong.
The cold part was the way they sat around that table and decided cruelty would make me obedient.
The number simply gave their cruelty a consequence.
I had not screamed.
I had not thrown wine.
I had not begged Graham to choose me over Paige.
I had taken a photograph.
I had opened a folder.
And I had asked the same question I had been asking for six months.
Where was the receipt?
They finally gave it to me themselves.
