Chapter 1 — They Beat the Bride for Her Condo—Then Her Father Opened a Folder

4.9Editorial score

Alexander lifted his hand from the document.

I looked down, expecting to see something dramatic—a secret ownership transfer, perhaps, or some hidden clause that would magically erase what had happened to Sofia.

It was nothing like that.

It was the original closing file from the Uptown condo.

The deed was in Sofia’s name alone.

Alexander had kept copies of every document connected to the purchase, along with correspondence showing that the property had been given to her years before the wedding.

There was no husband on the title.

No future in-law.

No family company.

No ambiguity.

“This is what Carmen wanted,” I said.

“Part of it,” Alexander replied.

He closed the folder again.

Then he looked at Sofia.

“Did they give you papers tonight?”

She nodded.

“A folder.

Carmen kept pushing it toward me.”

“Did you sign anything?”

“No.”

“Did you initial anything?”

“No.”

“Did you write your name anywhere?”

“No.”

Alexander’s shoulders loosened by half an inch.

“Then the condo is still yours.”

Sofia began to cry again, but this time the tears came with anger.

“I don’t care about the condo anymore.”

Alexander knelt beside her.

“I know.

This isn’t about the condo anymore.”

He looked at the torn wedding dress.

“It’s about what they did trying to take it.”

His earlier phone call had not been to some secret military unit or powerful government contact.

Alexander had called the hotel and demanded that management preserve security footage, electronic key records, hallway records, and anything left inside the honeymoon suite.

For all the coldness in his voice, his plan was painfully ordinary.

Preserve evidence.

Document injuries.

Do not warn the people responsible before the evidence was secured.

That practicality frightened me more than shouting would have.

Sofia resisted when I suggested a hospital again.

“They said they’d kill me if I talked.”

Alexander did not tell her to stop being afraid.

He sat on the floor in front of her and waited until she looked at him.

“I believe you,” he said.

“But tomorrow Carmen will have a version of tonight too.

Javier will have one.

Those six women will have one.

We need the truth documented before they can rewrite it.”

Sofia stared at the bruises around her wrists.

Finally she nodded.

We photographed the dress before she changed.

We photographed her face, her arms, the torn fabric, the places where blood had dried near the neckline.

Then Alexander put the wedding dress into a clean garment bag without washing or repairing anything.

At the hospital, Sofia told the same story again.

This time, a nurse listened while documenting every visible injury.
