Chapter 4 — My Wife’s Screams Led Me To My Trusted Man

4.9Editorial score

At 11:57, Vincent arrived at my downtown office.

He nodded to security.

He smiled at my receptionist.

He carried a leather folio under one arm and the confidence of a man walking toward a throne he had already measured for himself.

I watched him on the monitor from the conference room next door.

Grace stood in my office alone, just as he had instructed.

The safe behind my desk was open.

Inside sat a black folder identical to the one Vincent wanted.

Only it was empty.

Vincent entered without knocking.

‘Good girl,’ he said.

Grace did not flinch.

‘Where is Daniel?’

‘Breathing, for now.’ He closed the door.

‘Folder.’

She picked it up and held it against her chest.

‘What happens after I give it to you?’

Vincent smiled.

‘Your husband becomes reasonable.

He signs over South Pier.

He stops asking questions.

Maybe, in time, he even forgives you for being weak.’

‘And if he refuses?’

‘He will not get the chance.’

That was the second recording.

Vera stood beside me in the conference room, listening through the live feed.

Two detectives stood behind her.

They were not my men.

That was important.

Vera had chosen them carefully, people whose careers would be ruined if this turned into a favor for Elias Harrison.

On the monitor, Grace set the folder on my desk.

Vincent reached for it.

Then Grace said, ‘Before you open it, tell me why.’

His hand paused.

‘Why?’

‘You sat at our table.

Elias trusted you.

I trusted you.’

For a second, annoyance cracked his smooth face.

‘Trust is what men like Elias demand when they are too arrogant to see who is smarter.’

He stepped closer.

‘I carried him for years.

I fixed his mistakes.

I made calls he was too noble to make after marrying you.

Then he started cleaning house, cutting old partners, moving money into legitimate contracts, pretending the past could be washed away because he bought a quiet home and a wife with sad eyes.’

Grace’s voice was soft.

‘So you punished me for it.’

‘I used what he loved.

That is not punishment.

That is strategy.’

Vera touched the detective’s arm.

‘Enough,’ she said.

The office door opened.

I walked in first.

Vincent turned slowly.

The color drained from him so quickly it looked almost theatrical.
