Chapter 3 — My Husband Flew to Zurich With His Mistress—Then the Agent Raised His Phone

4.9Editorial score

No conveniently missing laptops.

I learned those details through a series of calls after Vanessa was escorted away from the gate area.

She was not dragged through the airport.

There was no theatrical scene.

That made it more frightening.

The agents were calm.

They asked questions.

They collected her devices.

They documented her possessions.

And they treated the entire situation as though they already knew exactly what they were looking for.

Before Vanessa left, she looked at me once more.

The contempt was gone.

In its place was calculation.

She was already deciding what she could blame on Mark.

I suspected Mark would eventually try the same thing.

His plane took off.

I stood at the window and watched it climb over Chicago.

For twelve years, Mark had been skilled at making me doubt my own instincts.

Whenever I questioned a strange expense, he had an explanation.

Whenever I noticed distance between us, he blamed work.

Whenever I talked about returning to forensic accounting, he found some reason our life needed me elsewhere.

“You don’t need that stress anymore,” he would say.

Or, “We’re doing well.

Why go backward?”

I had mistaken those words for concern.

Now I understood that Mark preferred a version of me who never examined anything too closely.

He had built his plan around that version.

The problem for him was that she had never really existed.

By the time Mark landed in Zurich, he had tried to contact me seven times.

I did not answer the first six.

The seventh came through while I was sitting in my attorney’s office with Daniel and two investigators reviewing copies of the records.

My attorney looked at the screen.

“You can answer if you want.”

I put the call on speaker.

Mark did not say hello.

“What did you do?”

His voice was low and furious.

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded once.

“I’m not sure what you mean,” I said.

“Don’t play games, Claire.

Our accounts are frozen.”

Our accounts.

He still said it as if he had not spent weeks arranging to take the money without me.

“That sounds serious.”

“Where is Vanessa?”

There it was.

Not Are you okay?

Not Why can’t I access our money?

His first real concern was Vanessa.

“I thought you were traveling alone,” I said.

Silence.

Then Mark recovered.

“She was on the same flight itinerary for the merger.

You know that.”

“No, Mark.
