Chapter 3 — My Husband Demanded $12,000—Then He Recognized the Name in My Folder

4.9Editorial score

And the two people standing in front of me are demanding another twelve thousand dollars while pretending none of that matters.”

Liam paced two steps away from the island.

“You went through my desk.”

There it was again.

Not: That signature is genuine.

Not: Your information was never used.

Not: The transfers are legitimate.

He was angry about where I had found the evidence.

“The papers involving my name became my concern the moment you used it,” I said.

Eleanor turned on him.

“What exactly did you put her name on?”

He snapped, “Mom, stop.”

Her face changed.

Until that moment, they had entered my kitchen as a team.

Eleanor had carried the bills.

Liam had supplied the intimidation.

They had assumed I was the problem to be managed.

Now Eleanor was beginning to wonder whether her son had told her everything.

I hadn’t expected that fracture to happen so quickly.

I closed the folder halfway.

Liam immediately stepped closer.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

“Those are private financial documents.”

“Some of them have my forged signature on them.”

His nostrils flared.

“Stop calling it forged.”

“Then tell the bank it’s authentic and explain when I signed it.”

Silence.

I could almost see him calculating.

The threat that had worked ten minutes earlier—anger, proximity, physical intimidation—was useless now.

The camera had captured him grabbing me.

The documents existed outside the apartment.

Taking the folder wouldn’t erase what had already been sent.

That was why I had sent copies before confronting him.

I had spent years watching businesses fail because someone confused possession of the paper with control of the information.

I wasn’t going to make that mistake in my own marriage.

Eleanor lowered herself onto one of the stools.

“You sent this to the police?”

“Yes.”

“Without talking to us first?”

I looked at the overdue notices she’d slapped onto my kitchen island.

“You came here demanding twelve thousand dollars for a liability attached to my identity without my consent.

Liam responded to my hesitation by grabbing my clothes and pulling me toward him.

What conversation did you think we were going to have?”

She looked away.

Liam leaned both hands on the counter.

“I was angry.

I shouldn’t have grabbed you.”

It was the first apology he had offered.

It came only after he learned someone had witnessed the assault.

I felt something inside me settle.

For months, I had been terrified that discovering the truth would break my marriage.

Standing there, I realized the truth hadn’t broken anything.

It had simply removed the cover from what was already broken.

My phone vibrated on the counter.
