Chapter 1 — Kyle Grabbed the Family Disappointment—Then Her Quiet Date Put Down His Soda

I turned my wrist toward the only weak point in Kyle’s grip.

His thumb.

People who grab to frighten you usually depend on surprise, pain, and the belief that you will pull directly against their strength.

Kyle expected me to yank backward.

He had already braced for it.

I stepped toward him instead.

My elbow folded close to my ribs.

My wrist rotated through the narrow space beside his thumb, and his fingers closed on nothing.

The release took less than a second.

Kyle stared at his empty hand.

I could have stopped there.

I wanted to stop there.

Then someone behind him gasped, and embarrassment flashed across his face.

He had built the entire afternoon around being the strongest person in the yard.

Now every relative was watching him realize he had lost control of a woman he had called soft.

Pride made the next decision for him.

He reached for me again.

This time he lunged with both hands.

I moved half a step to the side, caught his forearm, and guided his momentum past me.

My other hand settled above his elbow.

I turned my hips, lowered my center, and brought him down onto the grass beside the picnic table without striking him.

His knee touched first.

Then his free hand.

I controlled his arm just firmly enough to keep him from swinging around.

A paper plate slid from the table and landed upside down near his shoulder.

Potato salad spread across the grass.

The entire yard went silent.

Kyle’s breathing came hard and fast, more from shock than effort.

I knelt beside him, not on him, keeping his wrist aligned so he would not hurt himself by fighting.

“Are you finished?” I asked.

“Get off me!”

“I’m not on you.”

He tried to twist.

I adjusted the angle by a fraction.

His movement stopped.

Mark remained beside the fence.

He had not taken a single step toward us.

“Listen to her,” he said.

Kyle’s face had gone red.

“She attacked me!”

Several people looked at one another.

My aunt found her voice first.

“Maya, let him go.

This is his party.”

I looked at her.

“He grabbed me twice.”

“He was demonstrating something.”

“No,” Mark said.

“He was humiliating her.”

My mother hurried forward, wringing her hands.

“Can everyone please calm down?”

I almost admired the sentence.

It asked the person holding control to surrender it while placing no demand on the person who had created the danger.

I looked down at Kyle.

“I’m going to release your arm.

If you come at me again, I will put you back on the ground.
