Chapter 1 — He Opened My Divorce Papers—Then the Hospital Called About Our Twins

“Sir…

you need to come immediately.”

Daniel did not remember ending the call.

One moment the nurse was speaking.

The next, his phone was hanging loosely in his hand while my divorce papers lay scattered across the carpet of his office.

Vanessa had not made it to the elevator.

She turned when she heard his chair strike the wall.

“Daniel?”

He pushed past her.

“Claire’s in the hospital.”

Whatever Vanessa said next never reached him.

He ran.

Across town, I was staring at a ceiling that seemed too white and too bright while nurses moved around my bed.

The pain had begun as a tightening while I drove through the rain.

I had tried to convince myself it would pass.

By the time I reached a safe place to stop, another wave had folded me over the steering wheel.

An ambulance brought me the rest of the way.

Now monitors tracked two tiny heartbeats while a doctor calmly explained that the babies were under stress and that they were not willing to take chances.

“Claire,” she said, keeping her voice steady, “we’re watching both babies very closely.

If their heart rates don’t settle, we may need to deliver them tonight.”

Tonight.

The word emptied the room of everything else.

I was not thinking about Daniel’s affair anymore.

I was not thinking about Vanessa, hotel receipts, photographs, or the legal envelope traveling toward his office.

I was thinking about two unfinished cribs in the house I had left behind.

Two folded blankets.

Two names Daniel and I had once chosen while believing love could survive anything.

Liam.

Sophie.

Rachel arrived before Daniel did.

She came through the hospital doors with rain on her jacket and fear written across her face.

“I’m here,” she said.

I reached for her hand.

“The babies might come tonight.”

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Then we handle tonight.”

That was Rachel.

She never promised me things she could not control.

Minutes later, a nurse stepped into the room.

“Your husband is downstairs.”

My entire body went rigid.

Rachel looked at me.

“Do you want him here?”

I closed my eyes.

That question should have been easy.

For years, Daniel had been the person I wanted beside me when I was frightened.

During fertility appointments, he squeezed my hand before every blood test.

When treatments failed, he sat on the bathroom floor with me while I cried.

When we finally heard two heartbeats, he kissed my forehead so many times the ultrasound technician laughed.

But the man downstairs was also the man whose messages I had read.

The man who had told Vanessa things that belonged inside our marriage.

The man who had been sitting with her when my divorce petition landed on his desk.

“Not yet,” I whispered.

The nurse nodded.

Rachel did not celebrate the decision.

She simply stayed beside me.
